The Banjo Boys
Derek has been playing Irish music since he was five years old. A multi-instrumentalist, he is partial to tenor banjo but is known to play bouzouki when pressed. With several top awards in local competitions and two awards in solo banjo at the Midwest Fleadh, Derek is a serious banjo player, and who competed in the 2022 Fleadh Cheoil in Mullingar.
Morien's life is steeped in Irish music and dance. A four-time Midwest Fleadh champion in Accompaniment, he chose guitar as his primary instrument at six years old and took up banjo in 2017. He is currently the Midwest Fleadh banjo champion for his age group. In 2021, Morien received a special invitation during lockdown to travel to Ireland to compete in accompaniment at Fleadhfest in Sligo. He returned in the summer of 2022 to compete in four competitions at the All Ireland Fleadh Cheoil in Mullingar. A performer at heart, Morien can also be seen dancing in Kickin' It Irish and a Celtic Christmas Hooley.
History
Derek and Morien met in 2015 at the Minnesota Irish Musicians weekend which was organized by the Center for Irish Music and hosted at The Celtic Junction Arts Center. Since then, they've been honing their skills and having more and more fun playing together. Upon reaching the mature ages of 13 and 14 years old, they began venturing out onto the city streets to make noise and earn a coin or two, and even a pandemic couldn't slow them down for long. You may see them busking at farmers' markets, breweries, and the occasional coffee house.
